INTRODUCTION

Secure facilities, redundant systems and audited processes

Huoltovarmuusdata’s high-security data center production consists of the physical protection of data halls, meaning protection against environmental factors and weapons effects through rock shelter facilities and HPM spaces. The second level is availability, which means redundancy in the critical infrastructure of the data halls and the use of security systems. The third level consists of processes that ensure uninterrupted and secure service production.

The data centers are underground facilities designed for data center use. Their production technology and security systems have been implemented according to the highest customer needs and official requirements. The data centers are also equipped to meet the special criteria of emergency conditions and crisis situations. Huoltovarmuusdata’s own personnel produce, maintain and monitor the service production, maintenance and processes of the data centers.

Data center production comprises three physically separate data centers with a total of 12 data halls. All data halls can be connected to each other through the communications network provided by Huoltovarmuusdata, enabling even the most demanding system implementations across separate fire and protected structural compartments. The production facilities also include temporary relocation space, pre-installation and storage space, and high-security workspaces for customer use.

THREE LEVELS

Security and continuity as the foundation of all operations

Facilities

The data centers are S3-level underground facilities designed to withstand weapons effects.

Within the data center facilities, various security arrangements are used to divide the site into security zones in accordance with VAHTI guidelines. The facility’s technical spaces, such as power distribution, cooling production and logistics, are protected in the same way.

Access control monitoring systems use measures such as biometric identification, and video surveillance covers all access routes and spaces in the properties. The properties are protected by fire alarm systems, automatic fire suppression systems and environmental monitoring.

Availability

Availability refers to the availability of data center services, including the high availability of power supply and cooling.

Power supply to the properties is implemented from two separate transformer circuits and backed up with redundant emergency generators. Uninterrupted power supply to the data halls is secured with redundant UPS systems.

The cooling systems of the data halls are redundant and backed up in emergency situations with basin cooling. Operators’ communications connections enter the properties from different directions, and customers have access to connectivity options from all nationwide operators.

Processes

Processes ensure the quality and continuity of production in accordance with requirements and standards. They also secure the uninterrupted operation of facilities and availability systems.

Personnel, customer and service traffic in the data centers is always controlled. Everyone working in the data center, whether representing a supplier, customer or third party, always signs a non-disclosure commitment and undergoes security clearance procedures.

The facilities follow the jointly agreed security and visitor practices of the organizations using the underground properties, as well as the security policy, documented processes and procedures approved by the National Emergency Supply Agency.
